2018 Nissan Leaf: Why 29,990 is More Important to Some Than 150
The 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV and 2018 Tesla Model 3 are good cars that happen to be fully electric. What’s even more extraordinary is that those cars’ base prices are within reach of the average new-car consumer today, though that’s only true of the Tesla if you can patiently leave your name on a waiting list before wanting to bolt. So far, neither car has attempted to reach the Nissan Leaf’s lower price point, and an extraordinary car means nothing to new-car consumers if they can’t afford it. That’s where the 2018 Nissan Leaf enters the picture. Now with a projected EPA driving range of 150 miles, the Leaf easily leaps ahead of the 2017 model’s 107 miles, as well as the ranges of every other EV currently available that’s not a Tesla (the Model 3 is projected to have a range around 225 miles) or Chevrolet (the Bolt EV is rated at 238 miles of range). Well, for now. Ford has confirmed interest in building electric cars (including a 300-mile electric SUV), Hyundai and Kia are pushing harder on EVs (the Ioniq EV already has a 124-mile range), and EVs will become an increasingly important part of Volkswagen’s future. So the EV market is expanding, but many new-car buyers can’t wait a year or more for a car to become available. Many others aren’t willing to pay for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s $37,495 and 2018 Tesla Model 3’s $36,200 base price. The 2018 Nissan Leaf falls far short of those two in terms of EV range, but it also falls well short in price. The 2018 Leaf starts at $29,990, or $30,875 including destination. That puts the 150-mile Leaf more than $5,000 below the Model 3 and more than $6,000 below the Bolt EV. In this price class, that’s a ton of money saved. Will Chevrolet respond by adjusting the price of the Bolt EV, just as the Volt plug-in got price cuts after its initial release? With so many more EVs available compared to five and 10 years ago, we’ll see how the market reacts. Tesla recently cut the price of its most powerful Model S and Model X variants, but with the Model 3’s long waiting list, we’d be surprised to see any price cuts for now. In our thorough 2018 Nissan Leaf First Drive review, we called the new Leaf “satisfyingly quicker and more responsive” than its predecessor, with a quiet interior and “supple yet controlled ride quality.” That car is going up against our 2017 Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the also superb Tesla Model 3. Before the 2019 Nissan Leaf arrives with a more powerful variant with more range to go head to head with those two, the Leaf will also do battle with EVs in the low $30,000 range. The impressive 200-plus-mile range of the Bolt EV and Model 3 should help convince more buyers to make the switch to a fully electric car, but when your budget doesn’t allow for a near-$40,000 car (you’ll pay extra on the Model 3 for any exterior color besides black), the less expensive 2018 Nissan Leaf is more significant than its 150-mile range might suggest. You’ll still need to like the car itself, but simply having a low $30,000 base price opens the door for some, especially those who were already set on an EV. Lots of factors go into new-car purchases, from styling and performance to interior quality, safety tech, and, perhaps most important, budget. Whether the 2018 Nissan Leaf is passed by in favor of more expensive competitors with more impressive overall driving ranges remains to be seen; the sales battle begins when the Leaf goes on sale early in 2018. Industry Developments in Thermal Management of Electric Vehicle Batteries
Electric vehicles (EV) fall into two main categories: vehicles where an electric motor replaces a combustion engine and vehicles that feature a combustion engine assisted by an electric motor. All EV contain large, complex, rechargeable batteries, sometimes called traction batteries, to provide all or a portion of the vehicle’s propelling power.
In EV batteries, current flow, both charge and discharge, generates heat inside the cells and in their interconnection systems. This heat is proportional to the square of the flowing current multiplied by the internal resistance of the cells and the interconnect systems. The higher the current flow the more the heating will be produced. [1]
Battery manufacturers and researchers routinely investigate how the rate of heat generation in cells varies over the course of charging and discharging. Heat can be generated from multiple sources including internal losses of joule heating and local electrode overpotentials, the entropy of the cell reaction, heat of mixing, and side reactions. [2]
Proper thermal management of EV batteries (lithium-ion is the most common) is essential to maintain adequate and consistent performance of the battery and the vehicle. Excessive temperature will negatively affect an EV’s battery and its performance. Features that can be impacted include its electrochemical system, charge acceptance, power output, safety and life cycle/replacement cost and the vehicle’s driving distance.
From a thermal point of view, there are three main aspects to consider when using lithium-ion batteries in an EV:
At temperatures below 0°C (32°F), batteries lose charge due to slower chemical reactions taking place in the battery cells. The result is a significant loss in power, acceleration and driving range, and higher potential for battery damage during charging.
At temperatures above 30°C (86°F) the battery performance degrades, posing a real issue if a vehicle’s air conditioner is needed for passengers. The result is an impact on power density and reduced acceleration response.
Temperatures above 40°C (104°F) can lead to serious and irreversible damage in the battery. At even higher temperatures, e.g. 70-100°C, thermal runaway can occur. This is triggered when the runaway temperature is reached. The result is a self-heating chain reaction in a battery cell that causes its destruction while propagating to adjacent cells.
The ideal temperature range for an EV’s lithium-ion battery is akin to that preferred by human beings. To keep it in this range, the battery temperature must be monitored and adjusted. A battery thermal management system (BTMS) is necessary to prevent temperature extremes, ensure proper battery performance, and achieve the expected life cycle. An effective BTMS keeps cell temperatures within their allowed operating range. [1]
As defined by engineers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), EV battery pack thermal management is needed for three basic reasons: [5]
To ensure the pack operates in the desired temperature range for optimum performance and working life. A typical temperature range is 15-35°C.
To reduce uneven temperature distribution in the cells. Temperature differences should be less than 3-4C°.
To eliminate potential hazards related to uncontrolled temperature, e.g. thermal runaway.
Various cooling agents and methods are in use today as part of the thermal management of EV batteries. Among these are air cooling, the use of flowing liquid coolants, or direct immersion.
Air Cooling
The lowest cost method for EV battery cooling is with air. A passive air-cooling system uses outside air and the movement of the vehicle to cool the battery. Active air-cooling systems enhance this natural air with fans and blowers. Air cooling eliminates the need for cooling loops and any concerns about liquids leaking into the electronics. The added weight from using liquids, pumps and tubing is also avoided.
The trade-off is that air cooling, even with high-powered blowers, does not transport the same level of heat as a liquid system can. This has led to problems for EV in hot climates, including more temperature variation in battery pack cells. Blower noise can also be an issue.
Still, air-cooling solutions have their roles and value. An example is the custom-built Volkswagen EV race car that finished first in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colo. To optimize performance, the car was designed to combine minimum weight, as much downforce as possible, and maximum power. Volkswagen used air-cooling systems to reduce weight. It used thermal software in virtual driving tests along the entire race to ensure the air-cooling system would perform sufficiently. [10]
Liquid Cooling
Piped liquid cooling systems provide better battery thermal management because they are better at conducting heat away from batteries than air-cooling systems. One downside is the limited supply of liquid in the system compared with the essentially limitless amount of air that can flow through a battery.
Tesla’s thermal management system (as well as GM’s) uses liquid glycol as a coolant. Both the GM and Tesla systems transfer heat via a refrigeration cycle. Glycol coolant is distributed throughout the battery pack to cool the cells. Considering that Tesla has 7,000 cells to cool, this is a challenge. [11]
The Tesla Model S battery cooling system consists of a patented serpentine cooling pipe that winds through the battery pack and carries a flow of water-glycol coolant; thermal contact with the cells is through their sides by thermal transfer material.
General Motor’s Chevrolet Volt features a liquid cooling system to manage battery heat. Each rectangular battery cell is about the size of a children’s book. Sandwiched between the cells is an aluminum cooling plate. There are five individual coolant paths passing thru the plate in parallel, not in series as the Tesla system does. Each battery pouch (cell) is housed in a plastic frame. The frames with coolant plates are then stacked longitudinally to make the entire pack. [12]
Thermodynamic engineers at Porsche develop and optimize each vehicle’s entire cooling system. This includes the battery, of course, and one example is the liquid-filled cooling plate from the traction battery in the Boxster E. [13]
Based on the results of the analysis in the thermal model described above, the cooling plate was designed geometrically and optimized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The result is a highly efficient and lightweight heat exchanger, optimally tailored and adapted to the battery pack, with low pressure losses, high cooling performance and a very even distribution of temperature.
Liquid Immersion
Instead of snaking coolant through lines and chambers within a battery pack’s case, XING Mobility takes a different approach by immersing its cells in a non-conductive fluid with a high boiling point. The coolant is 3M Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid, a non-conductive fluid designed for heat transfer applications, fire suppression and supercomputer cooling.
XING’s batteries take the form of 42 lithium-ion-cell modules that can be put together to build larger battery solutions. The complete XING battery houses 4,200 individual 18,650 lithium-ion cells encased in liquid-cooled module packs. [14]
Simulation Technologies
Design of thermal management solutions requires extensive knowledge of cooling systems and the amount of heat generated by cells throughout the battery pack. Engineers must also weigh various tradeoffs and factors such as cost, packaging, manufacturability, efficiency, reliability of heat dissipation components, and battery pack as an integrated, modular system.
Batteries require a unique range of issues be taken into consideration. First, detailed models and sub-models are needed to simulate the chemical and physical phenomena inside battery cells. Then, these models need to be tied into a system-level model of a battery pack, which can comprise hundreds of cells and cooling circuits. Finally, the battery pack model needs to be integrated with the system model of the entire powertrain and vehicle.
Engineers must consider the physical placement of the battery pack within the EV, not only to minimize the effects of ambient temperatures and maximize heat dissipation but also to avoid excessive mechanical stresses, structural fatigue from road vibrations, and potential impact from road debris. The team also must consider crash scenarios in which passengers must be protected from toxic acids released from the battery pack.

Fans of EVs say reliability is part of their charm: no combustion engine, fewer moving parts, no muffler or catalytic converter, less wear and tear on the brakes. Now there’s proof from the most recent JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study: The Nissan Leaf (main photo) ranks as the most reliable car in its class and two other EVs, the BMW i3 and the Chevrolet Bolt EV, are in the top three in their categories, or three EVs out of 23 cars highlighted by Power as most dependable.
The 2020 study of reliability among three-year-old (2017) cars anointed Genesis as the most reliable brand and the Lexus ES as the single most reliable vehicle with the average ES having one problem every two years. Buick is the most dependable mainstream brand while Chrysler and Land Rover are least dependable. Toyota and GM had the most segment awards while Cadillac has the biggest one-year improvement. Tech features showed the most improvement but they (or their users) are still the most problematic areas.

Of All Power Surveys, VDS Is the Most Important
JD Power runs a lot of surveys and this is the most important one because reliability at three years is useful and meaningful. Power reports all car brands above and below average because when they tried years ago to report only above-average scores, USA Today or Automotive News got hold of the full report sold to automakers within a day. It’s harder to get drill-down information on individual model reliability from VDS. For that, you need Consumer Reports.

Less Drilldown Than You Want?
Some segments aren’t reported because of small sample sizes or the inability to get “at least three models with 80% of market sales or four models with 67% of the market sales in any given award segment.” For details, check out the Power VDS release. Meanwhile, you won’t as a potential car-buyer find model breakouts for these categories: city car, compact premium sporty car, compact multi-purpose vehicle, large premium car, large premium SUV. Not enough responses, the company says.
Tesla is not reported for a different reason: Power asks for owner/lessee contact information from the automakers, and Tesla doesn’t provide it.
Tech Features Are Better, Still Problematic
In-vehicle tech, one of the features that goes into the overall problems-per-100-cars rating, showed the most improvement from 2019 to 2020 among the eight breakout categories (and 177 specific problem areas) that make up the overall score. Yet it’s still the most problematic category. According to Power VP Dave Sargent:
“Many owners complain about these systems early in the ownership experience and, three years later, they’re still frustrated with them. We’re seeing improvement, but automakers still have a long way to go to before they can declare victory in this area. … the rapid introduction of technology is putting increased pressure on dependability, so it would not be surprising to see problem levels plateau, or even increase, over the next few years.”
Overall, the 2020 industry average of 134 problems per 100 cars is the lowest (best) over VDS’ 31 years. VDS the past two years has improved by 2 points this year, 6 points last year. Cars on average rate 7 points better than SUVs.

Recognition for EVs
For the first time, a battery-electric vehicle is a segment award-winner, the Nissan Leaf, which finished ahead of the Chevrolet Cruze and Toyota Corolla. The Chevrolet Bolt EV was top-three in the small car category along with the Honda Fit and Chevrolet Sonic, and the BMW i3 was runner-up to the BMW 2 Series in the small premium car category. The i3 is primarily an EV but can also be had with a helper engine (gasoline) to extend its range.
If you bought a Lexus ES in 2017, it’s been to the dealer once for a repair last year (statistically speaking), and you’ll go again for another fix around 2021. The ES’ 52 PP100 (problems per 100 cars) is Power’s best ever in the study’s 31 years.
Something for Most Makers to Celebrate

Being top-three gets you a medal at the Olympics and it’s a badge of distinction even if JD Power doesn’t license awards for first-runner-up or most-congenial. GM (Buick, Chevrolet, GMC) had 14 top-three finishes. Toyota-Lexus had eight top-three finishes.
But not everyone is full of smiles. Four automakers had twice as many problems reported as Genesis with 89 PP100: Volvo 185, Jaguar 186, Chrysler 214, Land Rover 220. Three of the four are luxury brands. A decade ago, premium-brand automakers could argue a premium car is more complex, so maybe it will spend more time at the dealership being serviced. But now among the top 10, positions 1-2-3-7-8 are premium brands, and with Porsche holding a top-five position the past few years, it’s hard for another German automaker to say that theirs needs more attention than Genesis or Lexus.
The corporate group with the most issues is Fiat Chrysler Automobile, or FCA. Of 32 brands in Power’s VDS, the FCA group holds positions 19-25-26-27-31. Ram trucks are doing reasonably well on sales, and the Chrysler Pacifica has lots of fans with more to come now that’s bringing back all-wheel-drive.

Nissan has unveiled the second-generation all-electric 2018 Leaf. This time around, the Leaf faces more competition with the new Chevrolet Bolt EV already on the market with 238 miles of EPA-rated range and the Tesla Model 3 launching with promises of 225 miles of range. By comparison, the 2018 Leaf goes on sale next year in the U.S. with only 150 miles, but Nissan promises that the figure will go up sometime in the future. Still, there is a lot for nerds to cheer about: ProPilot Assist This is the first leg on Nissan’s roadmap to autonomous driving. Self-driving is cool. Engineers and geeks in general like the tech behind it, and Nissan has tried to make it an easy and intuitive two-button process to engage. The automaker stresses this is not autopilot—this is assist, which means it should make driving easier and reduce fatigue, but the car demands hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The ProPilot Assist option is available on all but the base S trim level. Design The Leaf is no longer an oddball design nor does it look as much like a spaceship. Nerds will appreciate the fresher, understated modern look. One Millennial I consulted described it as a city car that is a cross between a Honda Fit and a Nissan Maxima—which he said is a good thing. Inside, the Leaf goes for a more traditional interior with regular-looking screens as opposed to the monster screen in a Tesla and the larger screens in a Bolt EV or Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. Gearshift The round knob shifter is funky and appeals to the nerd who knows how things work. That is good because there are no markings on the shifter itself to indicate drive, reverse or neutral, only a giant P in the middle of the shifter for park. There is a cheat sheet: a graphic in the center console showing the shift pattern for those who have not already memorized it. e-Pedal Other cars such as the Bolt EV let you one-pedal drive to a stop when the transmission is set to low, but the Leaf dials this technology up a notch, making one-pedal driving standard on all three trim levels and in regular drive. And Nissan’s system uses sensors to determine when the vehicle is coming to a stop, and if the car starts to slip on a hill, the brakes are mechanically applied to hold the car in place. This should appeal to the Silicon Valley set commuting from hilly San Francisco. Steering assist button Don’t like the steering assist that wrestles the car back into the proper lane if the driver fails to? After customer clinics, Nissan added a button to turn the feature off, if desired. The decision is recent enough that the prototype shown in Detroit does not even have it yet, but we are assured one of the blank spaces in the panel of buttons left of the steering wheel is for the steering assist button. Value proposition Nissan says customers will overlook the lesser range because they will appreciate the fact that it starts at $30,875 with destination charges when it goes on sale in all 50 states early next year. When Nissan dropped the price of the current Leaf to $29,999 from $34,000, it attracted more buyers and about 40 percent of buyers choose the entry-level S trim level. Even nerds like a good deal, right? Charge it please Nissan is sticking to the CHAdeMO fast-charging system but the charging stations it supports all have dual ports to also accommodate models that use the SAE standard CSS.
